JAMES Henry has signed a new two-year contract with Oxford United.

The experienced midfielder has been with the U’s since 2017, scoring 54 goals in 214 appearances.

Only 11 players have found the net more times in a United shirt and Henry is hungry to move further up the list.

The 33-year-old told the club’s official website: “There’s a board at the training ground with the list of top scorers on and I am so proud to see my name on it.

“The aim is to keep adding to that total but also to get this club to where we all want to go.

“It’s almost unrecognisable from the club I joined five years ago.

“The new training ground is fantastic, the standards we have set in everything we do are of the highest standards, and we want to keep improving and keep building on what we have done so far.”

Henry joined United from Wolves in July 2017 and is among a group of six players who were at the club when Karl Robinson arrived the following March.

He scored several important goals in his first two seasons as the U's flirted with relegation from Sky Bet League One, finding the net 15 times in 2018/19.

The former Reading trainee remained one of United's key figures as they started to challenge for promotion to the Sky Bet Championship in 2019/20.

Henry struck 14 goals as the U's reached the play-off final that season and was a regular the following campaign, when Robinson's side again finished in the top six.

Injuries restricted him to only 28 appearances in 2021/22, but he still scored memorable late winners at Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster Rovers, as well as a hat-trick against Lincoln City.

Robinson selected Henry in his XI for Saturday's opening-day trip to Derby County - his first start of 2022 - and the U’s head coach paid tribute to the midfielder.

He said: “He is an outstanding player and an outstanding human being.

“He has done so much for this club and been one of the most influential players ever since I first came here.

“He is still very fit, still makes a massive contribution in every game and it’s great to have him here and to see him commit his future to the club.”
