LUKE McNally is reportedly on the radar of Sky Bet Championship side Burnley.

The Clarets are considering making a ‘£1million-plus’ bid for the Oxford United centre back, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

A later report by The Irish Sun has since claimed the U’s have rejected three offers, the latest of £1.5m.

Burnley’s six-year stay in the Premier League ended with relegation last season and they unveiled former Manchester City and Belgium captain Vincent Kompany as manager earlier this week.

They have already waved goodbye to long-serving defenders James Tarkowski and Ben Mee this summer.

The Lancashire club would have to table a competitive offer for McNally, despite playing in a higher division and having one of the top centre backs in world football of recent times in charge.

The Irishman has two years left on his contract with United and showed great potential in his first season in English football, following his arrival from St Patrick’s Athletic last January.

The 22-year-old’s situation draws parallels with that of Rob Atkinson last summer. The former Eastleigh defender joined Bristol City in July for a fee believed to be around the £1.6million mark, plus add-ons.

Atkinson, then 22, was also coming off an impressive breakthrough Football League season and had two years left on his deal.

United have sold a centre back to the Championship in the previous three summers, with Rob Dickie joining Queens Park Rangers in 2020 and Curtis Nelson moving to Cardiff City in 2019.

McNally is one of three senior centre backs in the U’s squad, alongside club captain John Mousinho and Elliott Moore. The latter signed a new three-year contract earlier this month.
