FORMER Oxford United goalkeeper Max Crocombe grabbed an assist to help Grimsby Town into the Vanarama National League play-off semi-finals.

The 28-year-old New Zealand international left the U’s by mutual consent in August 2016, having come through the youth ranks at the club.

Crocombe gained a professional contract in 2012 after a previous spell at Buckingham Town.

After leaving United, he joined Sky Bet League Two side Carlisle United after a successful trial with the Cumbrians.

Crocombe was the hero for the Mariners as they beat Notts County in their play-off eliminator tie.

Ruben Rodrigues had put County in front with a 73rd minute penalty in front of a home crowd at Meadow Lane.

However, Grimsby pulled it back six minutes into added time with Crocombe sent forward, and touching on a free kick, enabling Gavan Holohan to equalise and send the match into extra time.

Crocombe’s presence in the penalty area saw two former U’s goalkeepers come up against each other, with Sam Slocombe in goal for County.

Slocombe spent one season with United, before leaving for then fourth tier side, Blackpool.

Meanwhile, another former U’s man – striker Ryan Taylor – played 81 minutes for Grimsby.

The Lincolnshire side completed the comeback in the 119th minute, with Mani Dieseruvwe bundling in, and will face Wrexham in the semi-finals.
