OXFORD United will go to Hillsborough again next season after Sheffield Wednesday were knocked out of the Sky Bet League One play-offs.

Patrick Roberts’ stoppage-time equaliser earned Sunderland a 1-1 draw in last night’s semi-final second leg, seeing them through 2-1 on aggregate.

It means the Black Cats will face Wycombe Wanderers in the Wembley final on Saturday, May 21.

Wednesday were targeting an immediate return to the second tier, but fell at the penultimate hurdle despite Lee Gregory levelling the tie 16 minutes from time.

Sunderland are aiming to avoid a fifth successive campaign in League One, having suffered play-off heartache in two of the previous three years.

If the Black Cats seal promotion to the Sky Bet Championship, it will further reduce the miles Oxford United clock up next season.

League One has already lost Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United, Gillingham, Doncaster Rovers, AFC Wimbledon and Crewe Alexandra, whose grounds are a total of 770 miles from the Kassam Stadium.

They have been replaced by Peterborough United, Derby County, Barnsley, Forest Green Rovers, Exeter City and Bristol Rovers, with the trips to these clubs coming to 636 miles.

There will be even more southern teams in League One if Northampton Town or United's arch-rivals Swindon Town win the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

They take on Mansfield Town and Port Vale respectively in the semi-finals.
