HERBIE Kane praised Oxford United’s desire and hunger to steal a point at home to Ipswich Town.

Bersant Celina’s goal from a rapid counter-attack looked to have got the visitors a precious three points in their hunt for a play-off place, however Luke McNally equalised for the U’s with a last minute header from Kane’s corner.

United have claimed an extra 11 points in the final 15 minutes of games this season, with two of those points coming last week at Shrewsbury Town when Cameron Brannagan netted an 83rd minute penalty to secure a 2-1 win.

The knack of scoring late goals served the U’s well against Ipswich, with Kane’s corner headed in by McNally, while goalkeeper Simon Eastwood was in the thick of things in the penalty box.

Kane said: “The time of the game, it’s got to be a good ball and get it in the right space and luckily, we’ve got the big fella to head it in.

“It’s an important goal and a good point.

“I think he [Eastwood] had a nosebleed being that far up the pitch but it’s extra bodies in the box – maybe that put them off for Luke to come in and score.

“We’re up there in England for the late goals, we’ve got that desire and hunger to carry on, and the character to never give up – that’s throughout the team and it’s important.”

He added: “It comes down to times in games where you have to dig deep, and we had to do that in the second half.

“You get those games, and we rode that after the goal.

“In games, those things happen and sometimes, it isn’t all pretty.

“We got the point, and we move onto the next game now.”

United were boosted by the biggest crowd of the season at the Kassam Stadium (11,029) and Kane said that level of support will be required in the final seven games of the season.

“The crowd helps a lot, especially at this time of the season – it’s good to see this many people here and we’re going to need them in the coming weeks,” he said.
