KARL Robinson was thrilled to see Oxford United put on a show as they blew Burton Albion away with a fantastic first-half display.
The U’s scored four times before the break to secure a 4-1 victory over the Brewers, with the final three goals coming in the space of ten minutes.
They were all quality strikes - Sam Baldock finished a great move to make it 2-0, before Gavin Whyte opened his account for the season from 20 yards and Matty Taylor volleyed home to take his 2021/22 tally to 20.
Baldock's first goal put United ahead after seven minutes and the performance had Robinson purring.
The U’s head coach said: “We came out firing, we came out playing really well.
“We were exceptional in that period and we were very pleased with our front-foot play.
“I thought we were very difficult to play against for large parts of that game.
“The second half was always going to be after the Lord Mayor’s show, but the players were very professional.”
Adlene Guedioura fired in a consolation in first-half stoppage-time, but the opening 45 minutes certainly belonged to United.
The U’s have now scored 71 goals in 37 Sky Bet League One games, the highest in the division, as they cemented fourth place in the table.
Robinson added: “It was beautiful to watch at times, we were ecstatic about that.
“Everyone keeps talking about other teams and we’re just going about our business. We’re certainly good value for money.
“The fourth official said to me: ‘I love watching your team’. We’re certainly getting a half-decent reputation.”
With victory all-but assured, United played it safe when Baldock went down six minutes into the second half after feeling a niggle in the back of his knee.
The striker has scored four goals in seven games since joining as a free agent last month and Robinson was keen to protect him.
He said: “We knew that (signing) was going to be a big one for us, we just hope his injury’s not too bad.
“We didn’t want to take a risk, being 4-1 up it was the right thing to do.”
There was also a concern about Cameron Brannagan, who was one booking away from a two-match ban.
Today’s game was the cut-off for the suspension, though, so the midfielder is no longer at risk.
Robinson explained that he instead chose to withdraw Herbie Kane late on because the midfielder is nursing an issue of his own.
The U’s boss said: “We talked about bringing him or Herbie off, Herbie had a problem with his groin over the last couple of weeks.”
