A LEAKED letter has revealed Oxford United’s preferred site for a new stadium.
The document outlines the club’s intention to leave the Kassam Stadium and build a new 18,000-capacity ground with associated facilities at Stratfield Brake Sports Ground, near Kidlington.
The leaked letter appears to have been sent by Oxfordshire County Council, which owns the land, to sports clubs who currently use the site, including Gosford All Blacks rugby club and Kidlington Cricket Club.
It outlines a formal proposal made by United to the county council to lease most of the site, roughly 18 hectares, for 250 years.
The council’s cabinet will consider whether to approve the land transfer in principle at its next meeting on Tuesday, January 18.
If United get the all-clear, they can begin to seek planning permission from planning authority Cherwell District Council for the Green Belt site.
It is part of the club’s aim to secure a long-term home, with their lease at the Kassam Stadium set to expire in 2026.
Stratfield Brake, near Oxford Parkway rail station and park and ride, fits in with the aim to build a more environmentally-friendly stadium outlined by director and prospective owner Anindya Bakrie in an interview in November.
The letter reveals initial plans for an 18,000-capacity ground plus hotel, retail and conference facilities.
It also states that United would be responsible for replacing existing community sports facilities and taking on running costs.
Clubs who currently use the site have been asked to provide their thoughts on the proposal ahead of next Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.
More details are expected to be confirmed later today.
