OXFORD United will be missing at least one player for the weekend’s home clash against Wigan Athletic due to Covid-19.

A positive result was returned at the club’s training ground this morning, as cases across football increase.

A handful of matches have been postponed in recent weeks, with the U’s seeing the reverse of the Wigan fixture called off just last month.

United boss Karl Robinson backed calls for this weekend’s fixtures to be postponed in order to get on top of cases at clubs.

He said: “I don’t get why we just say have one weekend off, one game off is going to cure a problem. 

“One thing that is incredibly important is clarity, if we all know regulations and we all respect the regulations, then I’m all for that. 

“We do have two cases internally, one staff member and one player – it’s part of the world we live in. 

“Both people are asymptomatic which shows you it’s so easy to catch it. 

“I know that, I’ve had it first-hand in the last month to six weeks, and most of our staff have, most of our players have. 

“The new variant seems to be spreading quicker than anything we’ve seen.

“We just have to take stock – the most important thing is that we show professionalism.”

Robinson also said greater clarity was needed in terms of how many players have to be unavailable due to coronavirus, in order to see a game called off.

He said: “What we call for from the EFL is proof of how many players you need to have out, almost like squad numbers.

“You name 24 in the squad and if x amount of that 24 aren’t available then you have to accept the consequences of that. 

“Give us a number and if that number is out with Covid-19, we will take that from there. 

“The regulations don’t seem to be clear for me.”
