Matilda Mutavdzic is embracing expectation at Wimbledon after starting off her quest for the girls’ singles title with a convincing opening-round victory.

The Oxfordshire 17-year-old is one of Britain’s best shots at a junior title at the All-England Club this year and is ranked 20th in the ITF junior rankings and the 13th seed in the event.

She dispatched Ukraine’s Sabina Zeynalova 6-2, 6-1 in an hour and 20 minutes on Court 4 to ease into the second round.

Now in the last 32, Mutavdzic’s next opponent will be Darja Vidmanova, from the Czech Republic, after she beat Switzerland’s Chelsea Fontenel.

The Oxon player said: “It’s always great to get the win, especially here at Wimbledon – home crowd, home turf.

“That alone is a great part of this victory.

“Aside from that, I am happy with how composed I stayed throughout the match and I think I executed my tactical and technical goals well.

“There were quite a few Brits on Court 4.

“The fact that everyone made the effort to come and watch made it that extra bit special.

“Wimbledon is probably the greatest tournament so being able to be one of the competitors in is just unbelievable.”

Mutavdzic had received a wildcard into the qualifying draw for the ladies’ singles but lost in straight sets to former top-20 player Ana Konjuh.

The highest-ranked British player in the draw, the 17-year-old knows that expectation may be high but instead of shying away from that, she is embracing it.

“The fact that I am a seed is something that’s pretty exciting and great, because not many people get the opportunity,” Mutavdzic said.

“Of course, that does add some pressure, but I’m looking forward to that pressure to see if I can live up to those expectations that people have in their minds.

“For this tournament, I would love to win it. I think that I am in a great place right now and I am playing some great tennis, so I do not see why I would not be able to achieve that.

“Obviously, I would need to continue to stay composed and try to execute my goals, but I definitely think that’s achievable.”
