Clanfield were within ten minutes of causing a huge upset against Premier Division leaders Almondsbury in the first round of the Hellenic League's SBJ Insurance Challenge Cup on Saturday.

After 80 minutes, the Division 1 West strugglers were leading the high-flying home team 2-1.

But a sending-off and a penalty led to Almondsbury scoring four goals in the last ten minutes to pull off a flattering 5-2 win.

Clanfield took the lead on the half-hour when Steve Olphert's free-kick was headed across goal by Eddie Everett to Chris Hunt, who slammed the ball home from ten yards.

Almondsbury drew level three minutes later when Ben Acock fouled Justin Bishjop just inside the area, and Kane Ingram scored from the penalty spot, despite keeper Chris Brain getting a hand to it.

Shortly afterwards, Clanfield were back in front when Sean McKeon put Reece Winney through on goal. Winney netted with a low shot to the delight of their large travelling support.

Two excellent saves from Brain early in the second half kept Clanfield in front, and they looked like pulling off a major giant-killing act.

But in the 80th minute, Clanfield's Chris Benson was sent off after receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Sahar Kabba inside the penalty area. Ingram equalised from the resultant spot-kick.

McKeon nearly restored Clanfield's lead with a shot just over the bar.

But Kabba then put Almondsbury ahead with a fine shot, before Justin Bishop and Kabba's superb second strike clinched the home side's passage into the next round.

Milton United recovered from a shaky start to edge past Kidlington 2-1 in a second round tie.

Danny Wise, taking advantage of a mistake by Milton's central defenders, put the visitors ahead after 11 minutes.

And only a great challenge by centre half Dean Flockton, making up for his previous error, prevented Wise from making it 2-0.

After Milton had a penalty appeal for handball turned down, they equalised in the 38th minute when Adam Bailey shot home from the edge of the penalty area.

The winning goal came two minutes after half-time when Matty Shelton's corner was headed home by Tom Rowe.

Despite promptings by Milton's Wayne Harbert, and strong play by Kidlington's James Deabill, there were no more goals.

So Milton earned a quarter-final tie at home to Highworth.
