KARL Robinson felt Oxford United were almost faultless against Northampton Town - but warned the win would count for nothing if they cannot back it up.
The U's did not get bogged down by a cagey first half as they blew away their opponents after the break, with Matty Taylor's double and goals from Mide Shodipo and Dan Agyei securing a 4-0 victory.
It stretched United's unbeaten run to five games in all competitions, although it was their first triumph in normal time since beating Wigan Athletic 2-1 on November 21.
The U's had scored just 16 times in 16 Sky Bet League One matches this season before last night and Robinson was delighted to put on a show for the 2,000 fans at the Kassam Stadium.
United's head coach said: "For the first time in a long time we’ve put a gulf between ourselves and a team in 90 minutes.
"This is why I love my job and I’ve missed loving my job.
"I love listening to people entertained, I love my players feeling the support that our fans give them.”
He added: "We feel it was almost as complete as you’re going to get, but I still feel we need more.
"If we’re having ambitions of this club being successful we’ve got to build on games like this."
Matty Taylor: Oxford United rediscovered killer instinct against Northampton
Northampton were missing several players through injury and suspension, but still limited the U's to few chances in a scrappy first period.
After Taylor opened the scoring four minutes after the break it was all United, with the visitors' only opportunity of note coming when Fraser Horsfall headed wide from a corner.
“I thought our turnover in possession and our intensity was quite incredible," Robinson said.
"You always knew the first half was going to be tight and they would stop and start it.
"They’ve done it better than anybody else than I’ve seen.
"The big turning point was at 2-0 they had a set play that they could have scored from and they didn’t.
"That’s the only bit of luck we got tonight."
United's head coach was also impressed with Agyei, who set up Taylor's second goal and curled home a brilliant effort in a 12-minute cameo.
Robinson said: “I’ve said many times about substitutes making a difference and not often enough have they done that this season.
"The difference is that when you’re winning players know they have to make some sort of impact on the game to be selected next time around.
“I’m made up for Dan, his last one is a great finish – the last time the fans saw him score was Shrewsbury away (on March 7) and it was a little bit like that one.”
