OXFORD United want to play the rearranged clash with Crewe Alexandra as soon as possible – because of unease over what will happen next this season.

With Saturday’s game at the Kassam Stadium being called off just over half an hour before kick-off due to coronavirus issues affecting the visitors, it will now be rescheduled.

There were immediate suggestions on Saturday it could be transferred to Tuesday, October 13.

While there could be issues over whether Crewe’s players will be self-isolating at that point, if it is not next week then the U’s must wait.

It is the only blank Tuesday until November 17.

Niall McWilliams, United’s managing director, said: “What we’d like to do is get the game played as quickly as we possibly can.

“What we don’t want is a significant backlog of fixtures.

“Let’s be perfectly honest, we don’t know how this game is going to go.

“Win, lose or draw we have to try to get that game out of the way.

“It’s just another example that we’ve got to be concerned moving forward.

“It’s only a personal opinion, but unless we get a rigorous testing programme in place I think we’re always going to get this.”

Crewe’s actions on Saturday left United unhappy, particularly over the delay in informing them about the positive test.

But McWilliams admitted as far as he was aware, the Railwaymen had not broken any EFL guidelines.

It was confirmed to the Oxford Mail by the EFL today that there was no stipulation in the guidance to clubs over when they have to notify the opposition about such a result.

The hosts felt it showed the rules needed to be clearer, with less room for interpretation.

The U’s’ chief said: “The rules are grey, but at Oxford United we’re very much black and white with it.

“We do not and will not take any chances.

“After the players have trained we will test and then again in five days’ time.

“That will be funded by the club, because we don’t want to put anyone at risk.”
