Slough Tn 4 (Harper 10, Gumbs 60, Nsubuga 84, Windsor 90)
Abingdon Utd 1 (Beechers 50)
Abingdon's unbeaten Division 1 West run of eleven games came to an unexpected end at struggling and managerless Slough on Saturday.
What was even more surprising was that the team second from the bottom in the table inflicted on United their heaviest defeat of the season.
Slough had lost their manager in midweek plus a player or two, but brought in four new faces including two on loan from Oxford City - Lee Rendell and Mark Janes.
Both had excellent games and helped to produce one of the best displays for Town this season.
Abingdon's lack of strength in depth was exposed by the absence of five regulars in Ryan Brooks (wedding), Jamie Brooks (hamstring), Ryan Curtin (one match suspension), Tom Franklin (flu) and Micheas Herbert (unavailable). Early pressure from Slough paid off after ten minutes when a corner was not cleared and mishit clearance ran along the six-yard box to Dean Harper, who smashed it into the net. Slough should have extended their lead just before half-time, but Janes shot wide.
Abingdon started the second half strongly. They equalised when Billy Beechers chested down a poor clearance, beat a challenge and buried the ball from the edge of the penalty area.
Slough regained the lead on the hour, against the run of play, when Jermaine Gumbs finished off after a quick break by Lee Charles.
The goal spurred on Town, and Abingdon heads began to drop.
The visitors' goal come under further pressure before, from a needless free-kick, Meddie Nsubuga diverted the ball home to make the game safe.
Slough rubbed salt in the wounds in the last seconds with a soft goal from Tom Windsor.
Abingdon Utd: Wilkins, Moss, Organ, Woodley, McCalmon, Carbon, Alexis, Beechers, Holden, Odhiambo, Mills (Druce 61). Subs not used: O'Hara, Tricker, Hemmings, Modu.
Attendance: 208
