Southend United may have beaten Manchester United in the Carling Cup last season, but they have come unstuck before against non-League opposition in the FA Cup - on a number of occasions.

The Shrimpers' most recent embarrassment was in 2004 when they were knocked out in the third round by Conference club Scarborough.

Held 1-1 at home, they made the long trip to the north-east for the replay, and went down 1-0. Scarborough then faced Chelsea in the fourth round, but lost 1-0.

In the first round that season, Southend had also been given a difficult time by near-neighbours Canvey Island, who held them 1-1 at Roots Hall before going down 3-2 in the replay.

Southend famously lost to then Conference side Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup at Roots Hall in 1998, and to Kingstonian at Roots Hall in 2001.

Indeed, most of Southend's worst results in the Cup have ironically come on their own ground.

Away from home they have been much steadier. Last season, for example, they won 2-0 at Barnsley in a third round replay after a 1-1 draw at home, before going down 3-1 at Tottenham in the fourth round in front of a crowd of 33,406.

Southend's most famous FA Cup result was in 1979 when they held European champions Liverpool to a goalless draw in the third round, in front of what is Roots Hall's record gate of 31,090, before going down 1-0 in the replay at Anfield.

OXFORD'S last meeting with Southend was the penultimate home game of the 2004-5 season - when goals from Craig Davies and Tommy Mooney brought them a 2-1 win.
