SEAN Clare has become Oxford United's third signing of the summer.

The 23-year-old joins from Scottish Championship side Hearts for an undisclosed fee, after agreeing a deal which will keep with the U's until 2023.

Clare started out as a midfielder but has been signed as a right back in a similar mould to Chris Cadden, who made a big impression on loan for Karl Robinson's side in the first half of last season.

He said: "I wouldn't put myself down as a defensive right back, but it's a side of my game I can improve on.

"I'm definitely an attacking right back with the ability to score and create."

Clare played in the Championship for Sheffield Wednesday just over two years ago, at the end of a campaign in which he started 20 League One games on loan at Gillingham.

He has made 71 appearance for Hearts in the last two seasons, scoring 12 goals.

The move brings him much closer to home in London, but United's history of improving players was a big part in the decision.

"Definitely," he said.

"I've seen the track record the club and the manager has in terms of getting players to develop and become better players all round.

"That's what really sold it, the manager was really talking about improving me.

"It's a club that is clearly ambitious and has a lot of good players.

"With the fact that the manager and staff want to make me better, it was a no-brainer."
