RUSSELL Martin insists Milton Keynes Dons’ position in the table means they will come for a win at Oxford United tomorrow.

Tranmere Rovers’ recent surge means the Dons are now only five points clear of trouble.

Martin claimed his first win as a manager when they beat United 1-0 in December.

And the Dons boss admits the stakes are high for the reverse fixture.

“I think they (Oxford) are trying to fight for promotion, we are trying to fight to stay in the league, so there’s a lot at stake,” he said.

“We are going to go there and try to win.

“We have to, it’s as simple as that with the position we are in.”

“I won’t be happy or feel safe until it (relegation) is mathematically impossible.”

Martin felt United were surprised by the Dons’ display before Christmas, but expects a far more difficult challenge at the Kassam Stadium.

The former Norwich City defender said: “I think they fully expected to win when they came here.

“They are a really good side and we limited them to really few chances on the day.

“It will be a tougher game at their place, there’s no doubt about it.

They are very good at home and play with a manager who is really strong and has a lot of conviction in what they do.

“I’ve seen a few of their games and even against Manchester City and Newcastle United, Premier League teams, they played exactly the same way.

“I have a lot of respect for that, so it’s important to us to make sure we go there and play the game we want.”
