Abingdon United pushed Ryman Premier side Maidstone United all the way in Wednesday night's FATrophy second qualifying round replay, before going down 5-3 to two late goals from the hosts.
They came back three times, only to fall to a hat-trick from Louis Cumbers, on loan from Gillingham.
After a goalless first half-hour, Lyndon Roland put the home side ahead.
Billy Beechers equalised within a minute, but Cumbers converted a penalty after a foul by Tom Franklin to make it 2-1 at the break.
Anaclet Odhiambo levelled the scores again on 57 minutes, with Maidstone regaining the lead through Mo Takalobigashi.
Ryan Curtin's 72nd-minute penalty gave Abingdon hope at 3-3, but as they pressed for a winner, Cumbers killed them off with two late goals.
Abingdon Utd: Tricker, Carbon, Organ. Woodley, Franklin, McCalmon, Alexis, J Brooks (Mills 86), Beechers (Moss 85), Odhiambo, Curtin. Sub not used: Druce.
