OXFORD United's record Football League appearance holder John Shuker has died aged 77.
The Manchester-born left half joined the club as an amateur in 1960 and stayed for an incredible 17 years, making 534 appearances.
He remained in Oxfordshire after hanging up his boots, living in Bampton for more than four decades.
Shuker was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s two years ago, passing away peacefully surrounded by his family last night.
A statement from United read: "Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this sad time and we will pay tribute to John at our home game against Hartlepool next Saturday."
His debut came in United's first home Football League game in August 1962 and Shuker went on to become part of the side which won two promotions in the 1960s.
Also useful as a striker, he finished the 1968/69 season as United's top-scorer – and his eight goals were crucial in keeping the club in the second tier.
Shuker went on to manage Witney Academy in 2001 before the club was abolished the following year. He also briefly worked as director of football at Milton United in 2000.
He is the second big figure United have lost in quick succession, following Jim Smith earlier this month.
