CAMERON Brannagan says Oxford United’s high standards will mean they saw the 2-2 draw at Accrington Stanley as two points dropped.

The midfielder put Karl Robinson’s side on course for a fourth straight victory with a 25-yard thunderbolt.

It put the visitors 2-1 up with 20 minutes to go, but just as after Tariqe Fosu’s opener, Accrington hit back with an equaliser.

While the home side looked the most threatening late on, Brannagan was not content with a draw.

“I want us to get promoted and do great things – so we need to be winning games like this,” he said.

“But there’s nothing we can do now and we’ll take the draw.

“We are humans, you’re not going to turn up and play well every week. That’s just how life is.

“We dug deep even though we didn’t play well and we’ll take the point and move on.”

He added: “You can see that with the way we’ve been playing the standards are set very high at the minute, on and off the pitch.

“Training has been great, the five-a-sides are competitive, it’s not just a little tinkle.”

Brannagan’s goal was his sixth of the season, tying his career-best haul from last term.

It was a sweet strike and the 23-year-old could not resist celebrating in front of the Stanley supporters behind the goal.

He said: “I knew when it came to my stronger side that I’ve got the ability to do that.

“I hit it well and as soon as it left my foot I knew there was no way the keeper was getting it.

“The Oxford fans are the only ones I care about. I’m really enjoying my football and love being here, so they (the Accrington fans) got the ‘shush’.”

Brannagan’s celebration came in the context of a combative contest which saw referee Martin Coy book nine players.

But Rob Dickie felt Jerome Opoku was fortunate to get away with just a caution following an altercation with U’s midfielder James Henry, who was also booked, just before half-time.

The defender said: “I think he hit Jamo in the face, I don’t see how you can get away with that.”

Accrington’s first goal ended United’s 520-minute run without conceding, which is a notable achievement.

“It is, but we are disappointed it’s gone in,” Dickie said.

“We’ll look to go on another run like that now.”
