GARETH Andrew’s superb five-wicket haul helped Oxfordshire record an eight-wicket win over Bedfordshire in their opening competitive 50-over clash of the season.
The all-rounder claimed 5-19 off ten overs – as well as two catches – as Oxon skittled their hosts for just 122 in 37.5 overs at Amptill CC yesterday.
Shabaaz Alam then blasted an unbeaten 76 as the visitors raced to 123-2 off just 18.3 overs.
Jonny Cater’s decision to insert the hosts proved an instant success, Andrew having Ben Howgego caught by Alam off just the third ball of the match.
Russell White then got in on the act, having fellow opener Luke Thomas caught by Andrew in the slips as Bedfordshire slumped to 9-2.
Andrew trapped James Kettleborough leg before, and although George Thurstance put up some resistance with a battling 49, none of his teammates could offer much support.
Andrew came back later in the innings to claim another three victims and complete an impressive five-wicket haul.
Joe Thomas wrapped things up by taking the final two wickets.
In reply, Alam was in no mood to hang about.
Although Harry Smith fell, his fellow opener was already in full flow.
Alam’s unbeaten 76 came off just 58 balls and included six fours and six sixes as Oxfordshire sped to a commanding success.
