MARK Jones is calling on his Oxford City players to keep their feet on the ground as they prepare to take on Chelmsford City in Vanarama National League South tomorrow.

The club’s 5-0 replay win over Hemel Hempstead Town on Tuesday night secured a first-round tie at Sky Bet League Two side Tranmere Rovers next month.

But Jones is eager to use that elation and build on the performance to climb the table.

He said: “We spoke recently about having a poor September, but so far, October couldn’t have gone any better.

“It was a great result and performance on Tuesday.

“But we now need to harness that as a coaching staff and ensure we keep the boys hungry and motivated to replicate that in the league.

“I think they will be really looking forward to getting out and playing again.”

City sit 17th and ended a four-game winless streak in the league with a 2-0 victory over Concord Rangers a fortnight ago.

The Cup has helped Jones’s side find form and they head into tomorrow’s fixture at Court Place Farm looking to extend their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions.

He added: “We have three league games to think about before we head to Tranmere.

“If we can go into that game in a good place, that would be great.”

Tuesday night’s victory was the second time this season City have won by five goals, following their victory over Cray Valley Paper Mills in the second qualifying round of the Cup.

The win against Hemel turned out to be a special night for Craig Fasanmade and Kyran Wiltshire, who netted their first senior goals for the club.

Jones said: “I have to say that some of our play was quite breath-taking.

“Two or three of our goals were from great moves and were very clinical, so that was really pleasing to see.

“But we had to dig deep at times, and had to show our defensive qualities too, and Craig (King) had to make important saves when we were under pressure.”

City entertain a Chelmsford side who are only three places above them in the table.

Jones’s team recorded the double over the Essex club last season, but he knows it counts for nothing tomorrow.

He said: “We need to earn the right to get anything out of them by doing the right things.

“As long as the players apply themselves, we will do ok.”

“Ability without application is useless, and that’s what we will drum into the players.”

Kabby Tshimanga and Reece Fleet both face fitness tests on slight hamstring niggles.

Meanwhile, defender Frankie Musonda is back on a

one-month loan from Luton Town.

He replaces Luke Ruddick, who is taking a break from the game due to work and family commitments.

Jones said: “We know Frankie well, and we were impressed with what he brought us last year.

“I would like to wish Luke all the best. I thank him for his efforts, he’s been great in the dressing room.”
