OXFORD United are worried Simon Eastwood will be out for up to two months after suffering a nasty finger injury in the warm-up against Fleetwood Town.
The goalkeeper landed awkwardly making a save and was rushed to hospital, with Scott Shearer stepping up from the bench for the 2-0 home defeat.
United are still awaiting confirmation of the injury’s severity, but if their concerns are realised then boss Karl Robinson suggested they would look at signing a goalkeeper on loan as cover.
To lose their No 1 is a huge blow, especially coming a week after Samir Carruthers damaged knee ligaments in the opening-day defeat at Barnsley.
Robinson said: “Some of the players were nearly physically sick before the game.
“His bone cracked, came out the skin and they had to put it back in and he’s rushed to go and see a plastic surgeon.
“We’re still waiting on the report from that.
“It’ll be a month, two months. To lose him and Samir for two months is horrendous.”
Robinson acknowledged his side were not at their best against Fleetwood, but pointed to the opening goal as a key moment.
Replays showed Ched Evans brought down Tony McMahon to buy himself the space from which he tapped in Kyle Dempsey’s cross in the 34thminute.
It was not spotted by referee Oliie Yates or his assistants.
“The referee was atrocious,” he said.
“We know we didn’t perform to the best of our ability, I’m not going to tell you we played well, but certainly Fleetwood didn’t out-play us.”
He added: “I’m disappointed with the result, but there’s a lot more to come from us.
“I know we’re nowhere near those levels yet, but once we start getting ourselves up and running there won’t be many teams who can compete with us.
“It will take time and patience, you need to keep your head strong and mentality right.”
