A missed conversion by Jim Farndon cost Henley Hawks a draw as they lost 14-12 to Gamorgan Wanderers in their trial match at Dry Leas on Saturday.
Trailing 14-7 with six minutes left, Hawks upped their game and fly-half Mark Meenan jinked enough to make space for Luke Burns to take an inside pass at pace and cross halfway out.
Farndon's kick to equalise the score went wide, and Hawks's further scoring attempts came to nought.
Henley trailed 3-0 after a tightly contested first half, and Aled James's second penalty doubled Glamorgan's lead just after the break.
The home side responded with a series of drives from lineouts. But it was from a five-metre scrum that No 8 Dave Archer picked up and scored for Farndon to convert to put them 7-6 ahead.
This advantage was shortlived, as the visitors responded with a penalty immediately took the game into Hawks territory, scoring a penalty.
For the first and only time in the game, they put driving mauls together and moved the ball wide to their right wing Josh Hannam to squeeze over in the corner on an overlap.
Despite Burns's late try, Henley could not catch them.
Next Saturday, Henley travel to Division 1 outfit Exeter Chiefs for another friendly.
