Didcot Town saw off newly-promoted Wessex League champions Gosport Borough at Loop Meadow on Saturday with a goal in each half of this Division 1 South & West encounter.

And Grant Goodall had more reason to celebrate than most with the second goal.

He hasn't scored in 190 games for Didcot since his arrival from Marlow in 2003.

But he delighted the home supporters with a superb headed goal from Josh Mulvany's right-wing cross in the 75th minute.

Didcot always looked in control and they opened the scoring in the 39th minute when Richard Witt produced a brilliant solo run to earn his side a corner.

It was taken short and Ashley Vine powered home a header following a pin-point cross from Goodall.

Gosport's best chance of the match had come just before that goal when Kevin Gill burst clear but hit a wayward shot over the bar from just 12 yards.

Didcot almost doubled the lead shortly after the break when Mulvany crossed to Ian Concannon, but he was denied by a diving stop from Mark Brown in the Gosport goal.

Didcot defender Scott Davis then saw his goalbound effort blocked.

Substitute Danny Allen forced Brown into the save of the game in the 61st minute as Didcot applied near constant pressure on the visitors' goal.

After Goodall made the game safe, Marc Green almost added another in the closing stages but Brown capped a fine display with a brave block as the Didcot striker bore down on goal.
