Abingdon United's Division 1 South & West season couldn't have started better when Micheas Herbert scored in the first minute.

From the kick-off, Abingdon won a corner, allowing Herbert to volley in between the keeper's outstretched arm and the defender on the post.

Abingdon were playing some quality football, especially through the middle, but City looked dangerous with Mekchiche on the ball and his silky skills kept James Organ busy all afternoon.

The second period started with an early goal for the visitors.

Ryan Curtin sent in a curling ball from a corner and Nathan Woodley stooped to head but dummied, which confused the keeper, and the ball went past him and swung into the goal.

United then settled into their stride, comfortably containing Winchester and restricting their attacking options.

Abingdon nearly added to their tally when Kevin Lewis rolled the ball into the path of Curtin, whose ferocious shot was pushed away for another corner by Davis.

From this flag kick, Richard Peirson crept in by the far post and headed back across goal, allowing Herbert to send the ball over the bar with an acrobatic overhead scissor kick.

Substitute Jamie Brooks linked well with Jack Smillie to set up Daniel Meade, who curled a shot just over the bar as Abingdon looked to put the game beyond the reach of the home side.

In time added on, Winchester were awarded a penalty that George converted.
