Didcot Town manager Stuart Peace wants his side to forget about their below-par pre-season displays when Division 1 South & West campaign starts tomorrow with the visit of Gosport Borough.

Town have won just one of their eight games and that was a 2-1 win at Hellenic League side Wantage.

"We have had a disappointing pre-season.

"We have made far too many individual errors for my liking. Perhaps because I have been away it's a case of while the cat's away, but that's going to stop now.

" I do feel confident we will have very good season. But pre-season games can be difficult to judge.

"I have been involved in sides that have lost all their games and got promotion, and others that have won them all and got relegated.

"The main thing is to get the fitness levels up. But results bred confidence and I am looking for us to back to how we should be playing."

Peace said the players would have to earn their places in Saturday's squad.

"There are only 11 shirts to start with.

"If you don't do enough then you won't get selected for Saturday. Gosport will be tough.

"Like us last year, they are new to the league and will be up for it and it's up to us to make sure they don't have an easy ride."

He added: "I want to improve on last season. We finished 13th and, while I'm not going to make any predictions, we have got to keep progressing.

"We've got to be looking at a top-ten finish and it's vital we get off to a good start."

Didcot will be without their former Hayes striker Michael Bartley, who is still a week away from returning after dislocating a shoulder in pre-season training, and Jack King (ankle).

Matty Jack (toe) is doubtful.

IN: Michael Watkins (Marlow), Matt Bicknell (Winchester C), Scott Davis (Abingdon Utd), Ashley Vine (Andover), Michael Bartley (Hayes).

OUT: Gary Wickens, Chris Webb (both Witney Utd), Ray Spence (undisclosed).
