ROBERT Tyreman’s late try earned Oxford Cavaliers a nail-biting 36-28 home win against Southampton Spitfires.
The victory leaves the side second in West of England Pool B after back-to-back victories.
Cavaliers conceded an early try to go 4-0 down, but they responded well.
Their pressure paid off when Arron Lambourne converted his own score to make it 6-4.
Cavaliers soon extended their advantage to ten points after tries from Robert Tyreman and debutant Rees Goggs.
Southampton crossed for another unconverted score.
But Cavaliers made it 24-8 at the break when James Jones, who was also making his debut, and Freddie Myatt crossed, Lambourne converting the latter.
After an error-strewn start to the second half, Southampton reduced the home side’s lead to 12 points.
But Cavaliers hit back as Goggs went over for his second, Lambourne adding the extras.
The result looked done and dusted, but the visitors punished their hosts with three quick tries to move to within two points.
And only a forward pass denied Southampton the opportunity to take the lead with five minutes to go.
But Cavaliers fought their way back into the game and Tyreman went over, Lambourne converting, to make sure of victory.
