Matchwinner Gary Twigg was delighted to convert the stoppage-time spot-kick that brought Oxford United their opening-day 1-0 victory over Forest Green, because, as he admitted: "I don't actually take penalties!"

The Scottish striker, signed from Airdrie in the summer, picked up the ball after he had been brought down by the keeper and then converted with an expertly struck shot into the bottom left corner.

Twigg said afterwards: "I've taken them before, but I've not taken them for a few years. I never took them for my last club at all, but when the chance came, I just took it."

Then again, with regular spot-kick-taker Rob Duffy off the field, there weren't too many teammates rushing up to grab the ball!

"I think I was looking around to see if there was anyone wanting to take it, but nobody took it so I just picked up the ball," Twigg said.

"Yes, there was pressure. It was the last minute of the first home game of the season. I felt confident enough to take it, and I was happy to see it go into the back of the net." United keeper Billy Turley, who took one of the spot kicks in the dramatic play-off semi-final second leg penalty shoot-out against Exeter - and fired against the post - disputed that no-one else was rushing up to take it.

"I went running up for it," Turley said, "but didn't get there in time!"

Twigg was pleased to get off the mark. "It's always nice to get a goal on your debut, but more importantly was the three points," he said.

"I was very disappointed not to score a few moments earlier but when the penalty came around I had the chance to redeem myself."
