CITY of Oxford’s masters squad excelled at the National Championships in Sheffield, returning with an impressive medal haul.

Dave Denny was among the stand-out performers, setting two British records in the 40-44 age group on his way to winning the 800m and 1,500m freestyle events.

He also took gold in the 400m individual medley (IM) and 100m fly, as well as silver in the 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke.

Denny was also part of the mixed 200-219 year team (combined age of 203), alongside Maggie Smith, Marie Royal and Matt Gomez, which won the 4x100m freestyle and medley titles, along with the 4x200m freestyle.

Gomes also enjoyed individual success in the 50-54 age group, claiming silver in the 200m IM and bronze in the 200m breaststroke as well as the 400 IM.

Tom Morrow came second in the 60-64 200m breaststroke and third in the 100m breaststroke.

Smith completed the medal haul, taking bronze in the 55-59 100m fly.

Meanwhile, two City juniors have been selected for their countries.

Connor Bryan will represent Wales at a European meet in Luxembourg, while Romania’s Arnold Martin is set for a Central European Juniors meet.
