STEVE Townsend was a narrow winner of the Oxford Winter League practice match, fished by 34 anglers on the Thames at Sandford and Abingdon.

In blustery conditions, the Drennan Oxford matchman caught skimmers and perch opposite Wilsham Road, Abingdon, for a winning weight of 23lb 1oz 0drms.

Clubmate Carl Eland was just behind in second place with a similar bag of 21.7.0, while Mark Bowerman (Sensas A4) was third with 17.4.0.

Pete Oliver, catching bream at ten metres, won the fourth round of Yarnton & District AC’s Winter League at a wild and windy Oxford Canal at Enslow Wharf.

Oliver recorded 16.8.0, while evergreen Steve Johnson was second with two bream and silvers for 10.15.0 and Jamie Godfrey was third on 6.8.0.

The weather did not stop carp feeding in Beehive AC’s Top Tackle points match at Frobury Farm.

Kevin Jeacock won with 61.7.0 carp to pole and maggot. Les Radford was just behind with 59.0.0, while Tim Whitewood came third with 30.0.0.
