JOSH Ruffels has sympathy for the massed ranks of Coventry City supporters heading to Wembley on Sunday, but he is aiming to send them home disappointed.

The midfielder came through the youth ranks with the Sky Blues in an 11-year spell which culminated in a first professional contract.

A pair of senior appearances followed, but regular football only arrived after the Kidlington youngster joined Oxford United in 2013.

That season a rent dispute with the owners of the Ricoh Arena saw Coventry play their home games at Northampton Town’s Sixfields.

The turbulent spell has continued with relegation to League Two confirmed this week and although it is less than four years since he left, Ruffels scarcely recognises what remains of his former club.

He said: “It’s crazy what’s happened there.

“It’s been a nightmare for the fans and I’m not surprised they’re unhappy.

“They’ll be wanting to have a day out at Wembley, but hopefully we can disappoint them, even though the club means a lot to me.”

The 23-year-old is one of only three players who started last season’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final who will be in the squad for Sunday’s return.

Although Barnsley ran out 3-2 winners 12 months ago, it was a huge moment for Ruffels, who started due to John Lundstram’s suspension.

“I remember looking round when the national anthem was played and thinking ‘Jesus, this is a bit different’,” he said.

“The day before we had a look round, but I don’t think you can really prepare for it, especially with how loud it is when you walk out.

“You have to cherish those moments, because you never know if you’re going to go back to Wembley again.

“We’re very lucky to go back so quickly.”
