WITNEY’S Steve Naylor overcame a fall to continue his fine cross country season with a top-20 finish at the English National Championships.

Naylor had never finished in the top 30 in the event at Donnington Park, Leicestershire, before this year and overcame heavy mud to cross in 17th in 43mins 58secs.

In a high-paced 12km race, full of rolling hills, Naylor, who was representing first-claim Bedford & County, found himself in 32nd place on the first lap.

After taking a tumble on lap two, he climbed up to 19th by the third and final loop and made up two places in the last mile.

BANBURY’S Tim Wright was the highest placed Oxfordshire finisher at the Bourton 10k, crossing 11th.

Les Newell (Oxford City), Dan Blake (Witney) and Richard Gould (Alchester) all finished in the top 20 in 13th, 17th and 19th.

Witney’s Matthew Lock was the second runner home in the junior category, finishing in 101st and a time of 40.01.

Clubmates Rachel Stanley-Evans and Sally Howard were the second and third veteran 40 ladies to cross the line.

WHITE Horse Harrier Richard Jegou defied windy conditions at the first weight pentathlon of the year in the Swindon Harriers Winter Throws Open to record a total of 2,745 points.

He beat local rivals Steve Pomeroy, of Abingdon, and Radley’s Alex Ahmet.

THE last round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League takes place at RAL Harwell on Sunday.

Under 20, senior and veteran men runners compete in an 8,500m race at 11.25am, and the women’s event across 6,500m is at 12.05pm.
