A DEPLETED Oxford City played out a goalless draw at play-off rivals Gosport Borough in Vanarama National League South.

The stalemate extended their winless run to seven games and keeps City five points adrift of the play-offs.

Despite being without suspended trio David King, Reece Fleet and Kynan Isaac as well as Alejandro-Adrian Santiago and Marlon Jackson to injury, City showed some signs their early season form was returning.

Justin Merritt's men started well, Carlos Pifarre-Forner setting up Paul Stonehouse, but his effort went high over the bar.

Gosport’s Rory Williams then sped down the right only to see Laurie Walker make a block with his legs.

Neither side were able to stamp their authority on the game, but City enjoyed the best of the exchanges.

A free-kick from Matt Whichelow found Lee Henderson who went close with a header.

However, they needed Walker to be alert to keep out a George Barker effort before City had to defend four successive corners.

The pressure was eventually relieved when they were awarded a free-kick and a powerful strike from Darren Pond carried straight into the hands of goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore.

City were in control for long periods after the break, but could not secure the three points.
