A “SHATTERED” Kemar Roofe is in need of a few days’ rest to ensure he is fit for Oxford United’s run-in, according to head coach Michael Appleton.

The 20-goal forward has been carrying a groin problem, which he admitted this week was hampering performances.

Roofe has started 38 games this season, more than the rest of his career combined and Appleton left him at home for Tuesday’s 4-1 win at Exeter City.

It is unclear whether the 23-year-old will be considered for Saturday’s visit to AFC Wimbledon, but the U’s boss felt a break now would reap dividends.

“I think he’s just shattered and needs a few days of shutting him down," Appleton said.

“It’s his first full season of professional football.

“He came to us last year and played 15 games.

“He’s done brilliantly and just needs to get away from things and switch off.

“We have some big games coming up and hopefully he will play a big part in that.”
