GEORGE Baldock believes Oxford United must play without fear at Brentford tonight as the full back seeks to help pull off a second major Capital One Cup upset in 12 months.

The 22-year-old was part of the MK Dons side which thrashed Manchester United 4-0 last August.

While victory for the U’s at Griffin Park may not quite match that shock, Baldock believes the key to springing another surprise for the underdog is just the same.

He said: “I think it’s the no-fear mindset.

“We were the underdogs, no-one expected us to win, so we went out and played with freedom.

“You have to be disciplined, not show them too much respect – go out and play your normal game.

“I’m sure if people tuned in and saw Oxford were beating Brentford it wouldn’t be a huge ‘look at that’ result, it would just be an upset.

“Bigger upsets have happened in the past and I’m confident, if we can play to our 100 per cent potential, there could be an upset.”

He added: “(The win over Manchester United) was probably the best day of my life, it was unbelievable and probably won’t be topped.

“That cup upset was arguably one of the biggest, but if we beat Brentford I’ll be happy again – it will mean I’ve been involved in two big cup upsets.

“I would take huge pride if we beat Brentford and it would be one of my finest nights in football.”

The Bees reached the Sky Bet Championship play-offs in May, but like the U’s, had to come from behind to draw at home on the opening day of the season on Saturday.

While United and Crawley Town finished 1-1, Brentford’s point came in dramatic fashion, with two goals in second-half stoppage time to end up 2-2 with Ipswich Town.

U’s left back Joe Skarz is well aware how tough the task will be for the visitors, but knows they have the talent to cause problems.

He said: “They are in the Championship so we’ve got to respect them and we know they’re good players, but the margins between winning and losing are not big at all.

“We’ve got players in our team who can create moments of brilliance out of nothing and I’m sure Brentford have too.

“It’s about who can nullify the other’s threat.

“We’re going there looking to take the game to them.”

One unexpected problem this evening could be the playing surface at Griffin Park.

Ipswich winger Ryan Fraser was critical on Saturday, saying: “I’ve never played on a pitch as bad as that before, especially at the start of the season.”
