OXFORDSHIRE fought back well as spinners Will Beer and Luke Ryan gave them the upper hand in their Unicorns Counties Championship clash with Wales at Great & Little Tew.
The hosts were on the back foot with Wales on 116-2 in their Western Division game.
But Oxon dismissed the visitors for 238 and had reached 35-1 by the close of the opening day.
After choosing to bat, Wales lost two early wickets to debutant Will Eason, who trapped both Greg Holmes and Jeremy Lawler leg before.
However, Sam Wood and Gareth Ansell led the reply with an 83-run stand which was ended when Wood also fell lbw to Chad Keegan.
Keegan struck to remove Sean Griffiths, caught by Richard Kaufman at mid on.
And it was then that Beer and Ryan took centre stage.
Beer dismissed Ansell for 71, caught by Kaufman at slip, before having Daniel Lewis-Williams taken by Lloyd Sabin at mid off.
He then trapped Connor Brown leg before.
Ryan got in on the act to remove Anueurin Norman, caught by Keegan.
Beer picked up another wicket in figures of 4-54 off 23 overs when Nick Davies edged to Kaufman at slip.
And Ryan, whose 2-42 came off 19.4 overs, wrapped things up when Hugo Darby – having dropped Darren Thomas four balls earlier – took the catch at deep backward square leg.
Darby was the one Oxfordshire wicket to fall, caught by Brown off Lewis-Williams.
