OXFORD University capped a festival of rowing at the Henley Women’s Regatta with victory over Brown University of the USA in the premier event, the Ron Needs Challenge Cup for Elite Eights.
Coach Christine Wilson was delighted with the outcome as her crew, which contained seven of the nine Boat Race victors, overcame Cornell and Stanford, before meeting and beating Brown by one and a half lengths in the final.
Oxford Brookes won the senior event with a half-length win over Dutch student club AASR Skol, having beaten the University of London in the semi-final.
The junior eights also went to an Oxford crew, as Headington School triumphed to win the Peabody Cup for the second year in a row.
Headington had successively raced Branksome Hall, Canada, and Philips Academy, USA, before meeting Kent School in a thrilling final, which they won by only a third of a length.
Wallingford’s Brianna Stubbs won the elite single after clubmate Lizzy Hart had won the senior category.
Yet more current and former Oxford students and Alumni were prominent racing for Britain in the second World Cup Regatta in Varese, Italy, helping the team to top the medal table with five golds.
The men’s eight with Oxford Blues, Peter Reed and Paul Bennett with St Edward’s old boy Stewart Innes, overturned the German eight to take the gold medal.
The women’s eight won bronze with a crew containing Headington’s Katie Greves, Oxford Brookes’ Olivia CarnegieBrown and coxed by Oxford Blue, Zoe de Toledo.
Wallingford’s Eleanor Piggott was in the GB second lightweight double, creating a stir with fourth place in the A final.
There were many leading crews at Marlow Regatta – the last chance to impress the Stewards before the Henley Royal Regatta.
Oxford Brookes, aiming to retain the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley, took the senior eights with their B crew.
Oxford Blue, Henry Goodier with Isis man Joshua Bugajski won the elite double sculls.
Radley College’s first eight came second, only two seconds behind National Schools’ gold medallists, Westminster, while their J14 octuple were also second.
Wallingford juniors had two wins at Thames Valley Park Regatta, Reading.
Max Thompson took the J15 single scull trophy and the double of Georgia-Mae Fry and Amy Bird.
