Oxfordshire lost by 40 runs to Berkshire in their opening Unicorns Counties Championship match at Henley.
Oxon started the final day needing an unlikely 77 runs for victory with just two wickets remaining.
Resuming on 119-8 in their second innings, they lost Joe White without addition to the overnight score, caught by Steve Naylor off Harry Stephens for 28.
But Karl Penhale and Liam Manley then added 36 for the last wicket, before the former was trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Chris Peploe for 39 as Oxon were bowled out for 155.
The former Middlesex man finished with 6-61 and match figures of 12-110.
