DANNY Hylton is reluctant to make predictions about his scoring tally but acknowledged he would be disappointed if this season was not the best of his career in front of goal.
Oxford United’s top hitman netted for the 14th time of the campaign in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Exeter City.
A dozen have come in Sky Bet League Two, where only Northampton Town’s Marc Richards, with 13, has scored more.
Superstition means Hylton dislikes setting targets, but the forward admitted the aim was to go past his previous highest mark for a season – the 16 he bagged for Aldershot Town in 2011/12.
The No 10, who will be looking to get closer to that tally at Stevenage tomorrow, said: “With 19 games to go I’d be very disappointed not to break that.
“I don’t want to set targets because I don’t want to jinx anything and I’m aware people can go on scoring droughts or get injured.
“I’ll just go into every game like I do – work hard, try to play well and if I get a chance to score I’ll do my best to take it.”
Hylton’s goal against Exeter was only his second in 13 appearances.
But despite a lack of goals, United’s No 10 has continued to perform well in other aspects.
Hylton insists his priority is on doing a job for the good of the team, so is unfazed about going through a barren spell if it allows teammates to thrive.
“Scoring’s not everything for me,” he said.
“If I score in every game then brilliant, but what I want to do in a game is contribute.
“If I’m not getting chances I’m sure someone else will, if I can assist them or close someone down to force a mistake which sets someone else up, then brilliant.
“I will continue to do that.”
