SOME of London Welsh’s squad players have staked a claim for a regular first team place, following good performances in cup games, according to Justin Burnell, writes SIMON WILLIAMS.
The continuing struggles of the Exiles – who have lost all 21 games this season – will undoubtedly give other players opportunities to force their way into the side for a future Aviva Premiership game.
Burnell used the same side for the recent European Challenge Cup games against Bordeaux and Lyon – largely fringe players – and, despite defeat in both games, the head coach was impressed by some individuals.
They included loosehead Eddie Aholelei, who passed the ball between his legs to create the space for Welsh’s first try against Lyon in Sunday’s game and was instrumental in the build-up to their second score.
“Eddie Aholelei was very good, (prop)] Ben Cooper played extremely well and (No 8) Ben Pienaar showed he can put a string of games together,” said Burnell.
“Also, Tristan Roberts, at 10, came in and put his hand up.
“If players perform well, they can keep the shirt.”
Welsh now have two games in the LV= Cup – at home to Saracens on Sunday and away to Newport Gwent Dragons the following week – before finally returning to league action on February 15.
And Burnell believes Welsh are getting nearer to that elusive first win.
He said: “We have seen certain examples of improvement, which is important at this stage of the season.”
