Alfie Potter was yesterday unveiled as an AFC Wimbledon player hours after he left Oxford United by mutual consent.

Last week head coach Michael Appleton revealed the 26-year-old had been told he was free to find a new club.

That has now happened, with Dons boss Neal Ardley saying yesterday they had fought off interest from elsewhere.

He said: “There were three or four clubs interested.

“The signing is announced today, but the hard work has gone on for two weeks prior to this.”

Appleton said: “We thank him for his efforts at Oxford United and wish him well for the future.”

The departure ends Potter’s long stay at the club, which began in 2009 initially on loan from Peterborough United.

He went on to make 195 appearances, with his 28 goals including the strike which sealed a 3-1 win against York City in the Conference play-off final at Wembley in 2010.

Potter has featured in 20 games this season, but aside from an excellent performance in the 3-1 win at Northampton Town in October he has struggled for form.
