Oxford City Stars pulled off a stunning 8-6 victory in a bad-tempered English National League South Division 1 match against the London Raiders that saw a staggering 211 minutes in penalties awarded to the two sides.

The result sees Oxford leapfrog both London and Cardiff in the league table to move eighth.

But the game will be remember for an incredible finale, that saw referee Dan Boardman end the game ten seconds early after a mass brawl.

Stars made a dream start, Zsolt Mastaleriu firing home inside three minutes.

Two minutes later, Alan Green scored on his return to the club as the hosts went 2-0 ahead.

Tom Davis and Liam Chong levelled before the end of the first period with Stars hit by penalties.

The boot was on the other foot when London found themselves in trouble with the officials, Evan Mackintosh and Josh Oliver finding the net.

Mackintosh’s second made it 5-2, but Raiders hit back as Grant Taylor and Vaclav Drabek reduced the lead to one.

Stars came back strongly in the third period when Josh Florey and Green gave the hosts a 7-4 lead.

More Oxford penalties allowed London back into the game, Alan Lack and Taylor scoring to set up a thrilling last five minutes.

With the visitors attempting to withdraw their netminder, Joe Oliver netted to make it 8-6 and seemingly make the game safe.

But the real drama then started.

Stars player-coach Darren Elliott slid into a tackle and collided with Chong, sparking a series of fights across the ice.

Elliott would go on to get a match penalty for clipping, while two London players were ejected from the game for a series of cowardly acts.

Raiders captain Tom Davis punched a concussed Andy Cox while on the floor, while Ross Wilkinson grabbed an Oxford player’s jersey, hauling him to the ground before landing several blows while defenceless.

It earned both players match penalties.

With the clock showing less then ten seconds remaining, referee Boardman chose to end the match for the players’ safety.

London visit again on January 25 in an eagerly-awaited rematch.
