Oxfordshire county player Deta Hedman’s dreams of capturing the BDO World Championship title were shattered with a 2-1 defeat to holder Lisa Ashton in the first round at Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green.

Hedman, the No 1 seed, was beaten for the third year running by her fellow England international in a match which was a repeat of last year’s final.

The Dark Destroyer fought back to level at 1-1 with the help of a 152 checkout after Ashton had taken the opening set.

But she was then blown away 3-0 in the decider with the Lancashire star hitting finishes of 90 and 156 – a record for the women’s competition.
