Oxford City crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday as they fell at their first hurdle to Southern League Division 1 South & West side Shortwood United in the second qualifying round.

City led at the break thanks to Adi Yussuf’s 32nd-minute strike, but the hosts hit back in the second half through Adam Price and Tim Haddock.

Bermudan goalkeeper Freddy Hall arguably could have done better with both goals on his first appearance for the club on an afternoon City will be keen to forget.

But it was the visitors, who also gave a debut from the bench to Marlon Jackson after the winger signed from FC Halifax on Friday, who bossed the early exchanges.

Yussuf wasted an early chance to put the visitors ahead when Kynan Isaac pulled the ball back from the bye-line, but City’s top scorer miscued his shot from inside the six-yard box.

Darren Pond also went close soon after, firing narrowly over from just inside the area.

But it was Yussuf who finally put City ahead, showing excellent control to chest down Paul Stonehouse’s cross before poking home.

Isaac could have doubled the lead on the brink of half-time, seeing his ferocious shot tipped over by goalkeeper Tom King.

And City’s profligacy would come back to haunt them as Shortwood returned from the half-time break a changed side.

An excellent through ball from Price put Langworthy in behind the visitors’ defence, but he was unable to beat Hall when one-on-one with the keeper.

However, the leveller came shortly after as Price seized on Stonehouse’s square pass to Lee Henderson before squeezing his effort beneath the City stopper.

And Haddock headed home the winner 11 minutes from time, capitalizing on Hall’s failure to clear a looping cross.

Substitute Lewis Wilson twice went close to saving the day for City, but was denied by some desperate defending from the hosts.

Abingdon United’s run in the competition came to an end as two second-half goals gave Southern League Premier Division outfit Dorchester Town a 2-0 victory at Northcourt Road.

Home keeper Jamie Zoldan made a flying save to turn over Chris Dillon’s shot in the opening minutes.

Dillon, Dan Smith and Joyce all squandered further chances for the visitors.

Abingdon almost made them pay before the break when Kieran Davis smashed a shot over from ten yards. Dorchester made the breakthough early in the second half, though, when Sam Lanahan beat Zoldan with a crisp shot into the far corner.

Abingdon hit back with Andrew Younie forcing a flying save out of Alan Walker-Harris.

Dorchester’s second goal came when Zoldan committed a foul in the penalty area, and Sam Smith sent him the wrong way from the spot.

Smith then hit both posts with a shot.

Banbury United were no match for Conference South side Weston-super-Mare as they slid out after a 3-0 defeat.

The Puritans fell behind in the 11th minute when a corner from the right was volleyed home by the unmarked Jake Harris from eight yards.

Weston proceeded to control the first half, and increased their lead just after the half-hour mark when a move down the left ended with Corey Williams firing home.

Banbury’s best spell came in the second half.

Substitute David Lynn stung Luke Purnell’s hands in the Weston goal, and fellow replacement Leam Howards broke through down the left, but from a narrow angle was unable to beat the keeper from eight yards.

Weston effectively sealed victory in the 69th minutes when Harris ran through down the left before slotting the ball home from a narrow angle past Leigh Bedwell.

Ardley United went out in heartbreaking fashion as Southern League Premier Division club Chippenham Town grabbed a late winner to prevail 1-0.

Just when it looked like the Hellenic League minnows, for whom Callum Convey had a penalty saved, may have done enough to earn a replay, Chippenham snatched victory in the 89th minute.

A quickly taken free-kick on the halfway line was played through to substitute Omar Simpson, who raced through to score. Chippenham had dominated with Michael Pook and Jordan Roberts, twice, wasting their best opportunities in the first half.

Poor finishing and great goalkeeping from Jack Harding prevented the hosts from scoring after the break.

Against the run of play, Ardley almost took the lead in the 63rd minute when they had the ball cleared off the line.

A minute later, substitute Jon Gardner was brought down, but Kent Kauppinen saved Convey’s spot-kick.

Luke Ingram and Danny Bone went close for the visitors, before Simpson broke Ardley’s hearts at the death.
