Jason Bean caught what is believed to be the first-ever zander from the River Cherwell in Kidlington AS’s Willoughby Memorial Trophy competition at Thrupp.
The species is not common in this area, having migrated from the Fens, in Cambridgeshire, to Oxfordshire via the Oxford Canal.
Bean’s four-ounce specimen did not trouble the scorers in the 11-strong contest, won by Jamie Barrett’s mixed bag of 5lb 1oz.
He collected a golden peg pot of £100 for his efforts on the low River Cherwell at Thrupp.
Henry Clarke was second with 4.6.0, and Dave Scott-Picton third on 4.0.0.
Bean still leads the points table after eight matches.
Latest standings: 1 J Bean 59pts, 2 J Barratt 48, 3 D Scott-Picton 45, 4 H Clarke 44.
