Callum O’Dowda is aiming to carry on a rich vein of form tomorrow as the winger admits he is in dreamland hearing Oxford United’s supporters chanting his name.
The 19-year-old from Kidlington is in line for a fourth successive start, which would be the best run of his fledgling career, when Michael Appleton’s side visit Luton Town.
After breaking into the side at the end of last season, O’Dowda has taken a big step forward in the last fortnight.
A maiden senior goal at Exeter City was followed up by excellent performances at home to Accrington Stanley and Stevenage.
- Latest United news:
In both games, the U’s fans sung his name, giving O’Dowda goosebumps and boosting his confidence.
He said: “Of course I heard it, I thrive off it and it really gets me going.
“It’s a dream because I was one of them at one point, singing other people’s names a few years ago.
“Now I just need to push on and hopefully help the team get as far up the table as we can.”
Despite the progress to becoming a regular starter, there is no sense a first taste of success is going to his head.
“You can’t get caught up in it,” he said.
“I’ve heard people say I’m the sort of character that’s not going to get carried away with it all.
“That’s the way it is, I just take every game as it comes, try to play as well as I can to help the team.”
If the run continues tomorrow, a clash with Luton at Kenilworth Road will provide a different test for the youngster.
O’Dowda is well aware of the rivalry between the two clubs after watching United’s 2-0 win at the Kassam Stadium in 2009, the last time they were in the same division.
He said: “I remember going to the home game against them. I was there in the North Stand with my dad.
“It was an amazing atmosphere and I can’t wait to see what it’s going to be like now.
“I’ve heard we’ve got 1,000 fans coming, which is going to be brilliant.
“I thrive off those kind of things and when the atmosphere’s good I think all our players will step up and hopefully we can get a win.”
