OXFORD United will get a double fitness boost today as Ryan Clarke and Andy Whing make their playing return after surgery this summer.
The pair are due to get their first action on the pitch for United’s development side against Southend United this afternoon.
It marks a big step towards becoming available for first-team selection after missing the whole of pre-season and the opening six weeks of the campaign.
Clarke went under the knife to correct a problem in his foot, while Whing’s operation was the latest on a troublesome groin injury, which the club hope has now been solved for good.
Latest United news:
A lack of experience was highlighted as an issue when Michael Appleton arrived at the club in July, so the U’s head coach is delighted to have two players who have made more than 700 appearances between them back in the fold.
He said: “It will be good for Whingy to get a run-out.
“He’s been looking good in training and he certainly gives us something different.
“He’s a unit – he’s a big lad and loves a tackle, so he definitely gives us an option.
“Clarkey’s going to play as well, so it will be good to see him back.”
While Whing is likely to need further games to get up to speed in midfield, Clarke could be back in the first team far quicker.
Providing the goalkeeper comes through the test unscathed, he might even be considered for the visit to Luton Town this weekend.
Speaking after United’s goalless draw at home to Stevenage on Saturday, Appleton said: “It would certainly give me a decision, wouldn’t it?
“We will assess it over the next seven to ten days and see where we get with it.”
Clarke’s return to fitness will turn up the pressure on George Long, who was signed on loan from Sheffield United this summer as cover for United’s No 1.
The 20-year-old has been preferred to Max Crocombe so far, playing every minute of the Sky Bet League Two campaign.
Long, who kept his first clean sheet last weekend, is well aware Clarke is nearing a return, but is only concerned with his own form.
“It’s good to have competition, but all I’m concentrating on is my job and playing well for Oxford,” he said. “That's all I can focus on.”
