London Welsh are desperate to make amends when they visit Bath today.

That is the view of back-row forward Lachlan McCaffrey, who was part of the side thrashed 52-0 at home by Exeter Chiefs in Sunday’s Aviva Premiership opener.

Welsh began the match fairly well, but ended up comprehensively beaten as missed tackles and individual errors took their toll.

Now as they look ahead to today’s clash at the Rec, the Exiles know they simply must do better.

“Last Sunday wasn’t a true reflection of where we are,” said Australian McCaffrey.

“We want to show everyone how well we can play when we put a full 80 minutes together.

“We all have confidence in what we are doing here.

“Everyone has worked really hard throughout pre-season.”

McCaffrey added: “If teams underestimate us, that’s their problem.

“We’ll just focus on playing really good rugby.

“That was just one game and it’s a long season.”

The Exiles have been working hard to eradicate Sunday’s mistakes from their game and prove they are not out of their depth back in the top flight.

“We are really excited to show the quality of our organisation and our squad,” said McCaffrey.

“We want to put in a good performance on Saturday and make sure we improve each week.”

McCaffrey, 24, joined the Exiles this summer from Super 15 side ACT Brumbies and now wants to make an impact in the Northern Hemisphere.

“I was excited by the new challenge,” he said.

“I have a British passport as my mum was born here, so the option was always here.”

McCaffrey started at No 8 against Exeter, but could well occupy all three back-row positions for Welsh this season.

“As long as I’m playing, I don’t mind,” he said.

“I have played most of my rugby at No 8, but I have had to adapt over here.

“Rugby is played a bit differently in this country.

“I played at seven against Pontypridd and I can also play at six, offering a line-out option.

“I just want to be involved as much as I can.”
