Charlie Brooks, who is based at Sarsden, near Chipping Norton, has called time on his latest foray into the training ranks.

Brooks, 51, has handed in his licence with immediate effect as his business partner Tom Lacey, whom he leased stables from at neighbouring Pudlicote, is moving his yard to Ledbury in Herefordshire.

Brooks had great success in the 1990s when he was based in Lambourn, including winning the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury twice with Couldnt Be Better in 1995 and Suny Bay in 1997.

Suny Bay was also runner-up in the 1997 and 1998 Grand Nationals.

He stopped training at the end of the 1997-98 season, before starting up again in Oxfordshire in 2011.

He operated on a much smaller scale in his second spell, sending out five winners as he concentrated on training young horses with the aim of selling them on.

In June, Brooks was found not guilty of perverting the course of justice as part of the phone-hacking trial at the Old Bailey in London.
