Shooter Dan Rivers said it was an amazing feeling to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal at Glasgow 2014.
The 23-year-old, from Didcot, secured a dominant victory in the 50m rifle three positions contest at Carnoustie, shooting consistently in yesterday’s breezy conditions.
Rivers achieved a Games best score of 452.9 points to add to the bronze he won in the 10m air rifle event last Friday.
“I didn’t think it could get much better than the bronze, but it has,” he said “It’s an amazing feeling. I felt really prepared going into this.
“The air rifle success was a surprise, but this is my strongest event.”
Wantage Target Shooting Club member Rivers underlined his medal potential by topping the morning’s qualifying session and picked up where he left off in the final.
He was second to England teammate Ken Parr after the first round, but led for the remainder of the contest, which combines kneeling, prone and standing positions.
In the end, he finished six points clear of silver medallist Sanjeev Rajput, while another Indian, Gagan Narang, took bronze.
Rivers said: “I had it in hand, I knew what I was doing and I took my chance with both hands “To come out top of the tree in qualifying was a great feeling and to back it up in the final was so reassuring.”
Rivers, who attended St Birinus School, Didcot, was delighted with the support he received at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre.
He added: “The crowd has been amazing – my grandad is here and he’s been the main man who has taken me through this right from the start.
“He’s never shot, but he’s an amazing man and my girlfriend is here as well.
“The support from Team England has been phenomenal – all the guys have come here from the trap final. Team England all the way!”
